Anomaly

What distinguishes you from others?

When I cut my toe nails and clean up the dirt behind the them, I automatically smell the dirt before I throw it away. Gross, I know. I don't like adding ketchup to my meals, especially when I eat bakso (meat balls) or soto (soup) which 99.99% people in Indonesia love to add more spices in those food. I don't. All my friends say I'm weird for that. I don't care. I live nomadly - as in I don't have permanent place to live. Most people wonder how I do that. Me too.

But  I think what distinguishes me from others was obvious in that 3rd grade science class exams. In all the textbooks we had, I remember it was said that the most beautiful planet in this universe is Saturn, because it has the rings that distinguishes it from other planets. I disagreed. Before the exams, my teacher asked us a quiz, and I answered differently. She said I was wrong and she corrected my answer.

Come the end semester exam. That question popped up one more time. My answer was (and still is) Earth. Because I thought (and still think) Earth is the most beautiful planet of all. The colours, the texture, the life in it. Everything. From all the 3rd grade classes, I was the only student who answered incorrectly on that question - yes, my teacher told me, and I didn't care. I still told her the same answer.

What's your anomaly?

  2. i like sad movies (i know that doesn't make me extraordinarily different in any way, but my friends think i'm weird / "they wouldn't have me any other way") ha ha! i can't think of anything else though.

this post has definitely got me thinking. thank you x

    1. i had to think hard too when Jessica asked me this question. i mean, if lady gaga is the trend-setter, than i am too normal. so instead oddity, i prefer anomaly. cause what's normal to us, might be weird for others, right?

  3. That was really dumb in my teacher's part! Hmm... I like trying new foods (even the grotesque kinds) out of curiosity.

  4. i love that this is you. i always felt so insecure when i felt like i was the odd ball out. i never followed trends and in high school and in my freshman year of college i wore skater clothes and dyed my hair. but for all the other asian girls, wearing all black "clubbing" clothes was the in thing and they looked at me weird. by the second year of college the trend was skater clothes and all those girls who made fun of me were now wearing cute anime t-shirts, baggy jeans with dyed hair. it totally baffled me. i loved vintage things when everyone loved chic modern designs. i would just like and think of the most random things. i hated this sometimes but now i'm more comfortable in my skin when i find myself as an "anomaly". but unfortunately for some being an anomaly is now a trend. so odd! :)

  5. Great post....you just got.me.thinking about me....i've always been considered "different", "weird", "unusual"...but i like.to think of it as "unique"....which applies to you too for what I read :)
Mmmmm my anomaly...eating cereal without milk? Ability to lie easily? My extreme mood swings and emotions and likes and dislikes? Refusing to live an average life of corporate world job, housewife and kids? My passion for art, mermaids and the moon? My thoughts? My fantasies? ....guess i gotta look more into that

  6. You are so fantastic,Niken! Love the story and your answer! I guess I am different because I eat vegan, I love animals more than anything, I prefer reading over talking and I don't like uneven numbers except of 13 and 7.

  10. I see nothing out of the norm favoring earth over saturn. after all, we don't live in saturn. who knows, maybe the view there isn't all that great.

I don't what my anomaly is, just that I am an individual, isn't that enough of a difference to be unique? I don't know.

    enjoy your day.

  13. I like how you put it - you are not different but things just distinguish you from other :) You are just willing to open your mind and see the world with your heart, not only with your mind. That is true beauty. Never lose that. Because it makes you appreciate life in a way a lot of people can't.
I love that you don't add spices and think that the earth is the most beautiful planet...I agree on both with you! :)
What distinguishes me a lot from others is that I love living the moment, giving a 100% when I think it's worth it, not when others think it makes sense (I did some crazy things with that and it was all worth it), I like not doing what society things is appropriate - as long as it doesn't hurt anybody :)

  14. Reminds me of Art class...I never understood how exactly the Art teacher could properly grade us on any of our work. Isn't Art & it's beauty up to the eye of the beholder?? I might think something looks beautiful, but the person next to me might think it's ugly. We're all unique...it's what makes us & Earth awesome! I agree with your answer to that science question!

As for my anomaly....hmm, I guess I have a bit of a unique sense of humour. I laugh a lot at things that no one else seems to find funny. It usually causes others to laugh at me (rather than with me)...but as long as we're all laughing, I don't mind.
